was the first published American poet and first African-American woman

Phillis Wheatley (1753 – December 5, 1784) was the first published American poet and first African-American woman whose writings helped create the genre of African American literature.[1] Born in Senegambia, she was made a slave at age seven. She was purchased by the Wheatley family of Boston, who taught her to read and write, and helped encourage her poetry.

The 1773 publication of Wheatley's Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral brought her fame, with figures such as George Washington praising her work. Wheatley also toured England and was praised in a poem by fellow African American poet Jupiter Hammon. Wheatley was emancipated by her owners after her poetic success, but stayed with the Wheatley family until the death of her former master and the breakup of his family.[2]

In 1768, Wheatley wrote "To the King's Most Excellent Majesty" in which she praised George III for repealing the Stamp Act.[6] However, as the American Revolution gained strength, Wheatley's writing turned to themes from the point of view of the colonists.

In 1770 Wheatley wrote a poetic tribute to George Whitefield that received widespread acclaim. Wheatley's poetry overwhelmingly revolves around Christian themes, with many poems dedicated to famous personalities. Over one-third consist of elegies, the remainder being on religious, classical, and abstract themes.[7] She rarely mentions her own situation in her poems. One of the few which refers to slavery is "On being brought from Africa to America":

Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land, Taught my benighted soul to understand That there's a God, that there's a Saviour too: Once I redemption neither sought nor knew. Some view our sable race with scornful eye, "Their colour is a diabolic dye." Remember, Christians, Negroes, black as Cain, May be refin'd, and join th' angelic train.´

Many white Americans of the time found it hard to believe that an African woman could write poetry, and Wheatley had to defend her literary ability in court in 1772.[8][9] She was examined by a group of Boston luminaries, including John Erving, Reverend Charles Chauncey, John Hancock, Thomas Hutchinson, the governor of Massachusetts, and his lieutenant governor Andrew Oliver. They concluded she had written the poems ascribed to her and signed an attestation which was published in the preface to her book Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral published in Aldgate, London in 1773. The book was published in London because publishers in Boston had refused to publish the text. Wheatley and her master's son, Nathanial Wheatley, went to London, where Selina, Countess of Huntingdon and the Earl of Dartmouth helped with the publication.

Through her poetry, Wheatley is credited with helping found African American literature.[10]

In 1778, African American poet Jupiter Hammon wrote an ode to Wheatley. Hammon never mentions himself in the poem, but it appears that in choosing Wheatley as a subject, he was acknowledging their common bond.

spread the Great Awakening

JAMES 5:16
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

George Whitefield (pronounced /ˈhwɪtfiːld/), also known as George Whitfield, (December 16, 1714 - September 30, 1770), was an Anglican itinerant minister who helped spread the Great Awakening in Great Britain and, especially, in the British North American colonies. His ministry had tremendous impact on American ideology.

Travels and evangelism

"Whitefield was a celebrity in his time and is considered by many to be the founder of the Evangelical movement."[3] Whitefield preached his first sermon in the Crypt Church in his home town of Gloucester. He had earlier become the leader of the Holy Club at Oxford when the Wesley brothers departed. The best known and the most written about Methodist when he adopted the practice of Hywel Harris of preaching in the open-air at Hanham's Mount, near Kingswood. In 1738, before going to America, where he became parish priest of Savannah, Georgia he invited John Wesley to preach in the open-air for the first time at Kingswood and then Blackheath, London. After a short stay in Georgia he returned home in the following year, resuming his open-air evangelistic activities.

JUMP

-Jumping is the act of propelling oneself upwards, using one's own power, into the air, and then returning back to either the same surface or another surface some distance away. why did u decide on JUMP as the company name and how does it reflect ur objectives?

In 1975, when JUMP was established in Taiwan we were an athletic sports brand and so JUMP made very good sense. Since then, as the brand's evolved, so has the meaning. It's come to represent more of a transcendental JUMP, a JUMP in consciousness, to be daring in how you express yourself. We still make great sneakers but what we offer now is a different sort of sneaker not necessarily meant for the court or the field but into the world of fashion, music and the arts. It is the definitive convergence of high end street and aggressive luxury.

- ur level of achievement is impressive. how did u start the company?

Though the company had been around for 30 years, achieving success globally, it just arrived to the US in 2007. We've done everything in a grassroots way, being aggressive with our design but careful with how we run our company. We've grown our business very organically and are careful with how we place our product, keeping a high level of exclusivity of distribution. We always think about the long term, risk adjusted success of the brand rather than the quick buck!

-tell me about the creative process. how dose the company come up with the designs for the collections? do u use adobe illustrator or photoshop in the rendering process?

The creative process begins in New York where we do our research and begin concepting the new collection. Concurrently we have designers and product development teams in Spain and in China. In China, we convene and begin the collaboration process where we share ideas and bring things to life. What you can achieve out there these days is amazing. The level of experience they have now is astonishing and you have access to basically any sort of material you want! You can have a sketch one day and a sample the next. This is the most exciting part of the entire process!

-what is ur most popular shoes?

The most popular shoe we have right now is called The Vanquish. It is a high top adapted from a best selling shoe from the 80s under one of our former brands, Travel Fox. In the 80s we sold hundreds of thousands of pairs so we decided we had to bring it back under JUMP using our funky materials. It's been phenomenal - doing some amazing things at retail in what is supposed to be a horrible economy. You can see more about it here http://jumpshoes.wordpress.com/2009/04/01/vanquish/.

-the mens collection seem to be getting a lot more press than the female collection, is there a reason? do men care more about their shoes then women? i know i do!!

This will change once we begin to offer the Vanquish for womens. At our store, we just had too many requests to ignore the demand for that shoe. I just gave Fergie a pair of the Vanquish in Reflex Patent.

-for the buyers reading this interview, what trade shows can we expect JUMP?

You'll find us at all the major shows:Project NY and Las Vegas, Compass Las Vegas, WSA C-7, Bread and Butter, FFANY, Mess Around Paris, all the regional shows including Miami, Chicago, Atlanta as well as a host of Canadian shows our distributor and his agents attend

-what r your prince points both men and women?

Men's range from $168 to $268 and women's range from $78 to $188.

-can we expect to see kobe byrant or rapper young jeezy in a piar of jump?

I don't see why not?! We made a personalized pair for Amar'e Stoudemire and he loved them. We had to open up a mould for size 14!

- what is in store for 20010 and other than the JUMP stores where can we find ur products?

You can find us in Bloomingdale's, Saks, Kitson, Oak and other great boutqiues. I leave for China on Saturday to work on Spring 10 but I think you'll see we're going to keep taking it to the next level.

- can i get a discount on the purple skins pair?

20% off! haha.

HAND BRA

A good bra is hard to find. Sometimes you just need a helping “hand” lol.

10 Controversial, Rejected and Removed iPhone Apps

There’s no mistake Apple is in hot water with their App Store inclusion/rejection process but some of the rejected were just plain bizarre. The most recent one that’s got the FCC investigating Apple, is the Google Voice app but before then, Apple had faced criticism from the public on various apps that were included and/or rejected. We’ve got 10 of them here for you

Booty Call
Why?: Sexual content

Apple doesn’t allow any sexual content on their app, but Booty Call didn’t have any sexual content, unless you count tips on hooking up.

Freedom Time
Why?: Making fun of public figures.

As you can tell by the picture in the app, it was probably targeting guys like Bush and politicians. I don’t see why this was a problem. Apparently Steve Jobs sent the app developer a personal email saying it’ll offend half of their customers.

Google Voice
Why?: AT&T told Apple to

This has caused the most controversy among all the rejected apps by Apple. It has led to government inquiries as well as the resignation of an Apple Board Member.

I am Rich
Why?: No reason other than stupidity

This was a dumb app to begin with. It’s just a red gem that glows but cost a whopping $999. Yup, that’s nine hundred and ninety nine dollars. Apple removed it in August 2008, but not before 8 people bought it. I wonder which idiot would such an app. I don’t know why Apple yanked the app. They could have left the app and laughed at the idiots who buy it. They still get 30% of the cut.

Netshare
Why?: No reason but because tethering wasn’t allowed on the iPhone.

This was a wonderful app that allowed tethering, something many iPhone users were clamoring for. Unfortunately AT&T pressure Apple to remove the app because it was taxing their network. Tethering is coming soon to the iPhone some this year.

Slasher
Why?: Offensive

Looks like a virtual app can increase crime. At least that’s what folks in UK were worried about when the slasher app. The app had a picture of a knife and when shaken it plays the Psycho theme.

Letter from my King!

Letter from my King!

My Princess,
Come to Me right now, and let Me open your spiritual eyes as I did for Elisha’s servant when a deadly army surrounded him. With his spiritual eyes he could see an entire host of My heavenly warriors and chariots of fire there to protect him. You are also My chosen one, and I promise to protect you if you will walk by faith in the midst of your daily battles. Don’t forget that there is an unseen enemy of your soul who will try to cause you to stumble, so let Me be your eyes when you cannot see. And remember “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). I am He. I am the one who fights for you. Even when you feel like you are in the middle of a war, the battle is not yours – its Mine. So let Me open your eyes of faith, and you will see that the victory is won.

Love,
God
Your king who gives you sight

Richard Haines for 3sixteen

Illustrator Richard Haines got together with New York’s 3sixteen for a series of works. Haines produced sketches for the 3sixteen street campaign, which has by now been plastered all over the Lower East Side. Once again the work is impressive and could not fit the 3sixteen brand any better.

Check out the video below of Richard Haines talking about the collaboration.

I’m on board for this project. I think its a cool concept. That song “As We Are” was dope!

BUT…… I really, really HOPE that they can produce a commercial, radio friendly enough song that can push the album and tour, cuz unless his bullshit lawyers kick ass on that appeal, he’s gonna be needing the money!

But again, I’m on deck. Nas is one of the few artist that can get a purchase from me, and this is one that will be in my collection.

July 23, 2009 - Why Does It Take So Long? - Daily Devotional

July 23, 2009
Why Does It Take So Long?
by Rick Warren

“The Lord your God will drive those nations out ahead of you little by little. You will not clear them away all at once” (Deuteronomy 7:22 NLT).

Although God could instantly transform us, He has chosen to develop us slowly. Jesus is deliberate in developing His disciples. Just as God allowed the Israelites to take over the Promised Land “little by little” so they wouldn’t be overwhelmed, He prefers to work in incremental steps in our lives.

Why does it take so long to change and grow up? There are several reasons.

We are slow learners. We often have to relearn a lesson forty or fifty times to really get it. The problems keep recurring, and we think, “Not again! I’ve already learned that!”—but God knows better. The history of Israel illustrates how quickly we forget the lessons God teaches us and how soon we revert to our old patterns of behavior. We need repeated exposure.

We have a lot to unlearn. Many people go to a counselor with a personal or relational problem that took years to develop and say, “I need you to fix me. I’ve got an hour.” They naïvely expect a quick solution to a long-standing, deep-rooted difficulty. Since most of our problems—and all of our bad habits—didn’t develop overnight, it’s unrealistic to expect them go away immediately.

Obama's Position On The Teaching Profession !!!

Is it likely that Obama's visit to Ghana will inspire the ordinary Ghanaian as well as our politicians and administrators to undertake a serious journey into SELF- EXAMINATION ? "An Unexamined Life is Not Worth Living". His address to the Ghanaian Parliament in Accra is a MASTERPIECE. Copies of the address must be made available to the general public. All citizens must make it a point to read it over and over again and meditate on it.

If 50.23 % of Ghanaians decide to change their attitude and refuse to give or accept bribes, the problem of corruption will be greatly reduced. Progress will become evident in our society. Social Justice will have a chance to thrive in our society. Pathological Greed, which is now considered as a norm among our Leaders and their close associates will gradually disappear. Tell yourself " Let there be true zero tolerance for corruption in Ghana. Let it begin with ME "

Govt is working hard to fix economy - Mills

The President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, has said the government is aware of the high expectations and anxiety of the electorate and is working hard to fix the economy in order to fulfil its electoral mandate.

He said contrary to the assertions of its political opponents that the issues confronting the well-being of the country had got out of its hand, “the government is in full control of developments in the country”.

President Mills said although the economy that the government inherited on its assumption of political power in January 2009 was severely challenged, several interventions had been taken to salvage it from a further slide and put it on an even keel to cushion the plight of the broad masses of the people.

Interacting with the presidential press corps at the Castle, Osu, on the occasion of his 65th birthday, President Mills said the government would not engage in any blame game with its opponents but concentrate all its efforts at fixing the economy to deal with the social problems of the people.

“We are not interested in blame games; we want to solve the problems of Ghanaians. That was why we were elected,” he said.

He said the government shared in the concerns of the vast majority of the people whom he said were going through very trying circumstances to make ends meet and would do everything within its power to alleviate their suffering.

EVISU denim, guess where my magpie logo came from????

We previously wrote about Scott Morrison being appointed the new chief executive officer of Evisu and the changes he had in store for the brand. At this year's Project New York trade show, buyers will get a glimpse at the Evisu jeans. Evisu is said to be focusing on authentic washes, new fits and a minimilization of the Evisu seagull pocket logo - with some styles featuring no seagull logo at all.

"We are showing an entirely new denim collection and I think people are going to see Evisu in a new light," said Morrison, who took the top job in May. "What happened in the Nineties was that Evisu became more of a streetwear brand that was very dependent on our seagull logo. People were buying it for the logo rather than the product."

It is no surprise that Morrison's new concept of Evisu takes a minimalist approach, since the two previous denim brands he oversaw, Earnest Sewn and Paper Denim & Cloth, both focused largely on the washes and fits, but kept its rear pockets low-key. All of the new Evisu product is made from selvedge denim, and retails from approximately $200 to $395. I admit, although I always admired Evisu's washes, I never really loved the back pocket logo, so this is interesting news. Can't wait to see more!
