WHAT THE HELZZ?

Besides being this teenage phenom, you know titles like Pharrell’s protége, princess of Star Trak, and choreographer for artists such as Beyoncé, Teyana Taylor is in fact one of the most down to earth people we know and has been a Hellz ride-or-die since day one.

Teyana was in L.A. last week for her “Ode to Summer” shoot with famed photographer, Ashley Walker. Here’s our ode to her: “Damn!” She wore pieces from our Spring ‘09 collection and put her own twist to it.

SUPER BAD!!

The scene-stealer wants to be more than just a smartass. He wants to be the King of Pop...Culture.
Story by Justin Monroe; Photography by Chris McPherson; Styling by Kelly McCabe
Jonah Hill is a control freak—or at least he’d like to be. Though he’s only 25, the L.A. native and member of Judd Apatow’s comedy crew has been in the game long enough to see through the glitz and tits of Hollywood—and to realize that what really matters is making flicks that he’d actually want to see. After his work in Superbad and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, he stepped back from the spotlight and focused on writing and producing so he could achieve the kind of career enjoyed by mentors like Apatow and Sacha Baron Cohen. Now, the results of his apprenticeship are in: He’s acting alongside Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen in July’s Funny People, the new Apatow-directed dramedy about stand-up comedians, and receiving producing and writing credits for his work on Cohen’s Brüno, which follows the comic’s flamboyant Austrian fashionista alter ego. Complex traveled to the faraway land of silicone and spray tans to talk with the rising star about what really matters to him and why Hollywood is so damn funny-style.
The Michael Jackson homage was your idea. How old were you the first time that MJ touched you…musically?
Jonah Hill: I’ve been obsessed with Michael Jackson, even the Jackson 5, since I was six or seven. The whole sound, the vibe, everything.
As a celebrity, are you inspired by his ability to avoid prison with his fame, money and power?
Jonah Hill: [Laughs.] Hopefully, I’ll never do anything that would put me in a position to go to jail. Is this whole interview gonna be about Michael Jackson?
Uh, no. What was it like to go to Crossroads High School with all the children of celebrities and not be famous or have famous parents?
Jonah Hill: A lot of great people I work with and know went to school there; three of my five best friends were in my grade, and my girlfriend was a grade below me. You did see the kids of celebrities get very special treatment, which kind of made you annoyed sometimes.
How has that affected your view of celebrity now that you’re famous?
Jonah Hill: It’s funny, because never once in my life was I like, “I want to be famous.” I’d say that’s the absolute worst part of my job. The best part of my job, the reason I’m so lucky and grateful, is that I get to make movies. And now I’m in a position where I get to make movies that I like as opposed to doing any movie that’s thrown my way. To me, that’s the dream—acting in stuff that I wrote, and producing—’cause then, whether I fail or succeed, I fail or succeed on my own terms. If it’s a huge piece of shit, it’s my huge piece of shit as opposed to someone else’s piece of shit with my face on it. [Laughs.]
So the 21 Jump Street movie that you’re developing is gonna be your vision?
Jonah Hill: [Sony execs said] they were gonna let me make my kind of movie—an R-rated, insane, Bad-Boys-meets-John Hughes-type movie—and I told them the second they don’t, I’m not gonna be involved anymore.
Seriously though, is that project just an excuse for you to buy a 21 Jump Street box set and watch it at home naked for two weeks?
Jonah Hill: Yeah, to go to town on myself. Whacking it four times a day to Holly Robinson Peete. [Laughs.]
And here we had you pegged as a Dustin Nguyen guy. You didn’t have his Tiger Beat posters on your wall?
Jonah Hill: I liked Growing Pains a lot. Someone should make that into a movie and…I’m kidding. No one should make that into a movie.

NIKE WOLVERINE X SABRETOOTH PACK

Most blockbuster movies are released in conjunction with a fast food chain or crappy merchandising deal, but 'X-Men Origins : Wolverine' goes one better with the release of a Nike duo-pack to coincide with the launch of the film. The lead character, Wolverine takes the cake with the Big Nike silhouette while his arch-enemy Sabretooth gets the more subdued AM95. The Big Nike takes direct inspiration from Wolverine's uniform colours - red, blue and yellow, with massive claw marks that rip into the upper (ala Methamphibian) and the tongue logo. The Sabretooth AM95 also takes direct inspiration from the colourings of the mighty comic book character, giving the lace unit an extra dose of fur to represent Sabretooth's maine. Available now at Proper.

Canal Street AF1 Inspired by the Fakes

When I moved to New York and I first saw a family picture of folks fully decked in Louis Vuitton Monogram gear, it took the enlightenment of a friend to “explain” the fakes and their existence in certain part of the city. With this spirit Solefood Shop created the Canal street AF1. There’s something kinda humorous about them. Of course we wonder if anyone will get sued…via racked

I DREAM A DREAM THAT I DREAM

I dream a dream of a big loft area where i can fill it with all my friends and family and still have more room. in my dream that i dream, i saw the dinning room, living room, tv room, a two way tv; big tv placed on a wall unit that divides the living room and tv room, and u can watch tv on both sides (dope).
in my dream that i dream i didnt see the bedrooms so i am in expectation that they are upstairs. PRAISE THE LORD, I RECEIVE MY LOFT IN JESUS NAME AND WITH WISDOM I FILL THE CONTENTS OF MY HOUSE!

THE TRUTH IS FAR MORE SINISTER!!!!-Louis Vuitton recently hit up XXL about Rick Ross wearing fake LV sunglasses on the cover of their magazine,

-Hmmm, I doubt Louis Vuitton is feeling the idea of customizing shades, it makes bootlegging easier. Does customizing a product take away from its authenticity?- realtalkny.com

-Al, Rick Ross shades are fake, louie released a statement sating they didnt produce these particular item in their collection- Allison

-What are fake about these? they are customized louies! he probably had the same design idea but ma man Rick Ross beat him to it "DEF GUY"- Uzi

-As we reported yesterday, Louis Vuitton recently hit up XXL about Rick Ross wearing fake LV sunglasses on the cover of their magazine, now the rapper is trying to explain. Rick Ross says that the glasses he wore on the cover were customized with solid gold accents by Jacob Bernstein, also known as "The Sunglasses Pimp."
"It’s the same thing as buying a Rolls Royce and having it tricked out; just because the product has been customized by me doesn’t take away from the fact that the frames are authentic Louis Vuitton Millionaires," Bernstein says, who has customized glasses for
Jay-ZKanye West,BeyonceFergie and even Brad Pitt. Michael D. Pantalony, a Louis Vuitton Malletier, countered the statement by saying "We were dismayed to see the cover," continuing "Because the photo has generated considerable confusion among your readers and Louis Vuitton customers among others, we feel it is important to clarify several points.”
Pantalony went on to say "The first is that the sunglasses
Mr. Ross is wearing were not made by Louis Vuitton, and in fact, are counterfeit." He continues "Louis Vuitton did not grant permission to Mr. Ross or to whoever did make the sunglasses to use our trademarks. The second is that no affiliation, sponsorship or association exists between Rick Ross or XXL and Louis Vuitton. The third is that counterfeiting is illegal."-

WHAT EVER YOU DO, KEEP IT SMOOTH.

GOURMET COLLECTION

Possibly the most idiosyncratic indie brand to hit the sneaker scene in a long minute is Gourmet. Founded by Grey Lucci, Greg Johnson and Jon Buscemi (with a combined history working at adidas, Zoo York, Supreme, Stussy, Oliver Peoples, DC Shoes and SNAFU between them), Gourmet shoes are an inspired take on ye olde classics with unexpected design twists added for extra bite
Gourmet footwear epitomizes duality and ingenuity by referencing iconic American causal shapes and remixing them in high-end fabrications. It combines technical and athletic elements like air technology and memory foam insoles that mingle with quality leather from a French tannery, hand-woven custom canvases, crinkled high gloss-patent and pig skin leather, or even pony feather. The excellent materials create the sleek identity classic products, which is absolutely more than a pair of footwear to people.

This Gourmet collection recently dropped at the Juice store and come courtesy of our mates at Clot.

INDUSTRY INSIDERS: GET LIVE: There is nothing like Pain, Progress and Passion to get you more ALIVE, LIVE MECHANICS

- My advise to anyone that wants to be in this business is that they must have a vision for themselves and stick to it. As far as capitol that really depends on big you want to start out.
- Live Mechanics can be found at specialty stores and chains throughout the US and in various pockets across the world. Look out for Fall 2009, PEACE!

- Our common objective is to be a vehicle of information to world, in other words the CNN of fashion. As far as influences, hip-hop was definitely an inspiration for the brand, but we were also insipired and driven by other forms of art & music as well as political & social conditions around the world.
- Our markenting strategy is to simply maintain our integrity by staying focus and not following anyone elses lead. We just want to continue to think outside the box in everything we do.

- Live Mechanics, the name broken down basically means taking the fact we are "aLive" and using our God given physical & intellectual "Mechanics" to impose our talents on the world. In conjunction Live Mechanics is also the Triple P Philosophy (Passion, Pain, Progress). *You have to have 'Passion' for what you believe in.
*You will experience 'Pain' for what you believe in while trying to reach your goals.
*But if you stay focused and determined you will acheive 'Progress'.

INDUSTRY INSIDERS: NEW ERA marketing/ product placement with JENNIFER

-Being the in charge of marketing/ product placement what is your basic objectives? My basic objectives are to grow the brand through product placement recognition and create strategic marketing partnerships with celebrities and tastemakers.

What is your marketing strategy? Well, I can’t give away the secrets of success…! But I can say that New Era is one of the few companies that has successfully been able to grow organically without having to deliberately “market” the brand.

-Why do u think the new york yankee cap has become a hip hop staple? Even ppl from different states wear this cap Caps in general have really become a statement piece, a part of a consumer’s lifestyle. The Yankee cap in particular has been such a representation of hip hop with the help of celebrities such as: Jay-Z, Diddy, and Russell Simmons to name a few…the list goes on and on. Since the roots of hip hop literally started in New York, the Yankees Cap signifies NY.

-U had a program where u did a lot of signature pieces for celebrities and taste makers, is that still in effect and what were the most sucessful.
(I enjoyed the diplomat signature cap) Our “Capture the Flag” program is still one of our signature programs where we invite iconic artists or athletes to create a custom headwear piece with New Era – we keep the project limited and only release 200 units into the market. Our most recent CTF’s were with Travis Barker, Ludacris and Danny Way. Travis’ cap was definitely one of our more successful projects as was one of the first CTF’s with Fabolous. Fab’s cap actually had a diamond on the cap…

-Tell us more about New Era expanding into sports wear and how is the market responding. We expanded the brand into sportswear and apparel, launching the first collection this spring, since it was just a natural fit and progression for New Era. We have an authenticity and history that has been established not only with traditional sports but has also crossed over into streetwear, so extending the brand to a lifestyle consumer was an obvious next step! I think the market is definitely responding well – there is still the consumer who is looking for the “hook up” to the cap, whether it’s a similar color way or design.

What do u enjoy about ur job? I actually think I’m very lucky to be able to say that I love my job…it’s a challenge to be able to match your personal strengths with a position in corporate America, but I’ve been able to do that. I love the fact that each day for me is unique; whether it’s attending or activating events, creating new projects and collaborations with artists or pulling product to place, each day is never the same.

We have an exciting new Artist Series project launching in September with the Seventh Letter and our newest CTF this year is with….Linkin Park (ssshh!!)

DOPE

Star Trek’s new Lt. Sulu talks knife fights, battles of the bands and saving the planet.

RESPECT THE ARCHITECT.
I feel pressure to do the Sulu role justice, because growing up it meant a lot to see George Takei on television. To see him as a helmsman of a spaceship and not throwing kicks or chops or speaking with an accent was very meaningful to me.

BEWARE OF RABID FANS.
I’ve been very stunned at the different types of people that are Star Trek fans. There have been a lot of favors asked to get things from the set. Stoner fans are less scary because they don’t have their wits about them, and you can protect yourself in a knife fight. They’re not very sober, and you can easily take advantage of that.

TUNE IN.
For my band [Viva La Union] to be successful, it takes the ability to focus on one task at a time. As far as competing with other celeb-rock bands, Keanu Reeves seems like a strong guy, and he could probably kick my ass. But Jared Leto wears mascara, so we could probably take him.

LOOK GOOD.
I use a lot of products that have high oil content on my skin at all times. Lots of musk is the way to go; high-powered musk, to be specific. And spend thousands of dollars at T.J. Maxx.

GO GREEN.
I went to Home Depot and bought a lot of fluorescent lights. And I started todrink my own urine. I haven’t gotten a hybrid yet because my wife wants a big car for our new baby. But I have stopped using paper bags at the grocery store. Now I just use a cadre of assistants to carry everything.

CELEBRITY REAR VEW!

u know a celebrity is from the HOOD when she gives u a rear view shot. how do i know this? Try it; one day while u and ur fav hood chi friend or friends are hanging out, convinently pull out ur camera and ask for a pic. "Aooooow" she will reply and after the frist 3 shots it may seem like all is lost but be faithful. by shot 4 she will naturally deliver.
