D.I.Y. GUIDE TO INSTANT VINTAGE JEANS

Those hot gurls over at Marc Ecko's Complex did a banging post on getting that vintage look in a matter of minutes rather than 10 or 20 years! I have to quote them because, well, Complex is awesome, and one of my favorite inspirational sites!

If you're looking for some new jeans, we'd usually suggest a nice pair of raw, unwashed denim. There's nothing better than buying a new pair, breaking 'em in, and watching 'em transform into a unique denim tapestry with rips and abrasions exclusive to you, and you alone. But these days, everything's about convenience and speed. If you want to skip the whole process and get that worn-in look from the get-go, we could put you on to a number of dope vintage jeans, but most of them are crazy expensive. Don't fret, my dude, we got you. You can get that vintage look for...free. Free? Yup, like a mixtape or streaming porn. The technique is called light abrasion and can be executed with a couple of tools and a little bit of free time. (Sound like your usual weekend repertoire, yeah? Ayo!) Keep reading and we'll show you how you can fake it 'til you make it...

• Gather the tools of the trade: Water in a spray bottle, coarse sandpaper, a crayon, and untreated denim.

• Mark the area you want to work on with your crayon and draw the desired pattern.

• Start to "abrade" the area by distressing the marked area with sandpaper. Spray water and repeat.

• Launder your denim inside-out and tumble dry. Who needs to spend $300 on distressed jeans?

BOMA YE's INDUSTRY INSIDERS: NEW ERA marketing/ product placement with JENNIFER

-Being the in charge of marketing/ product placement what is your basic objectives? My basic objectives are to grow the brand through product placement recognition and create strategic marketing partnerships with celebrities and tastemakers.

What is your marketing strategy? Well, I can’t give away the secrets of success…! But I can say that New Era is one of the few companies that has successfully been able to grow organically without having to deliberately “market” the brand.

-Why do u think the new york yankee cap has become a hip hop staple? Even ppl from different states wear this cap Caps in general have really become a statement piece, a part of a consumer’s lifestyle. The Yankee cap in particular has been such a representation of hip hop with the help of celebrities such as: Jay-Z, Diddy, and Russell Simmons to name a few…the list goes on and on. Since the roots of hip hop literally started in New York, the Yankees Cap signifies NY.

-U had a program where u did a lot of signature pieces for celebrities and taste makers, is that still in effect and what were the most sucessful.
(I enjoyed the diplomat signature cap) Our “Capture the Flag” program is still one of our signature programs where we invite iconic artists or athletes to create a custom headwear piece with New Era – we keep the project limited and only release 200 units into the market. Our most recent CTF’s were with Travis Barker, Ludacris and Danny Way. Travis’ cap was definitely one of our more successful projects as was one of the first CTF’s with Fabolous. Fab’s cap actually had a diamond on the cap…

-Tell us more about New Era expanding into sports wear and how is the market responding. We expanded the brand into sportswear and apparel, launching the first collection this spring, since it was just a natural fit and progression for New Era. We have an authenticity and history that has been established not only with traditional sports but has also crossed over into streetwear, so extending the brand to a lifestyle consumer was an obvious next step! I think the market is definitely responding well – there is still the consumer who is looking for the “hook up” to the cap, whether it’s a similar color way or design.

What do u enjoy about ur job? I actually think I’m very lucky to be able to say that I love my job…it’s a challenge to be able to match your personal strengths with a position in corporate America, but I’ve been able to do that. I love the fact that each day for me is unique; whether it’s attending or activating events, creating new projects and collaborations with artists or pulling product to place, each day is never the same.

We have an exciting new Artist Series project launching in September with the Seventh Letter and our newest CTF this year is with….Linkin Park (ssshh!!)

Michelangelo-Saint Anthony Tormented by Demons

Michelangelo would insist that he was a sculptor; but like most Renaissance masters, he would create paintings as well. Most of his painted works are in the form of frescos, in which paint is applied directly to wet plaster on a wall or ceiling, as in his renowned frescos for the Sistine Chapel.

Of his paintings on canvas only four are known. Two of these are unfinished and one of them was long in question, a remarkable painting of The Torment of Saint Anthony. This painting was recently purchased by the Kimbell Art Museum and even more recently, has been determined to be the work of Michelangelo’s hand by scholars at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The painting is also notable in that it is the first and only painting by Michelangelo in an American collection. It will be part of the Kimbell’s permanent collection, and will go on display at the Metropolitan Museum of art in New York on June 15, 2009 (though I can’t find reference to this on the Met’s own site).

This article on The Guardian shows some detail views of the work, as well as some infrared and x-ray images that reveal changes Michelangelo made as he created the painting (above, lower right).

The painting is in oil and tempera on a wood panel, and is painted after an engraving by Martin Schongauer, Saint Anthony Tormented by Demons (image above, lower left), which Michelangelo had access to and made a color drawing of, as well as this painting.

The story of the torment (or temptation) of Saint Anthony has always been a juicy subject for artists, in that it gives them free license to let their imagination go wild with hallucinatory visions of the tormenting demons. Many great artists have found it fertile ground. There is an article on culture xy about the subject, with interpretations by Bosch, Matthias Grünewald (see my post on Matthias Grünewald), Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí and Salvator Rosa that includes Schongauer’s engraving.

Michelangelo’s version brings Schongauer’s spiky Bosch-like demons to life with rich colors and vibrant textures, as they accost Anthony, their twisted forms a whirl of rage and threat; and their leathery wings lifting him into the air from the edge of a precipice and suspending him above a detailed landscape rendered in hazy atmospheric perspective.

If God loves you, who cares what anybody else thinks.

In our Devotionals series, Pastor Rick Warren discusses the Bible passages that inspire him the most. Today's Devotional is based on this passage:
“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God” (Ephesians 3:18-19 NLT).
We worship God when we realize just how much He loves us; by seeking to understand “how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is” (Ephesians 3:18 NLT).
The width of God’s love extends across the entire world and includes all people, everyone He has created: “The Lord is righteous in all His ways and loving toward all He has made” (Psalm 145:17 NIV, emphasis mine). God loves the whole world (John 3:16).
God never made a person that He didn’t love. He made you; He loves you; and God doesn’t make junk! He loves you unconditionally. He loves you very, very, very, very, very much.
Everybody matters to God; in fact, we see in the life of Jesus that He even loves the unlovely, and those who may feel unlovable. Do you want to know the secret of self-esteem? Here it is: If you want confidence, then understand how much you matter to God. If God loves you, who cares what anybody else thinks.
Because God loves you, there’s no need to prove your self-worth. We don’t need props anymore to make us feel good about ourselves. We don’t have to wear certain kinds of clothes to make us feel like we’re okay, or drive a certain kind of car to prop up our faltering egos. We don’t need status symbols anymore.
It is an act of worship when you accept that God’s love is wide enough to include everyone, including you!

-i am no longer the type of person that buys expensisve labels for attention. i am no longer that type of person that acts or reacts a certain way to prove my confidence; GOD loves me and i don't give a $%@+ about what u think about me!
